Andrew awarded an MBE

Queens 2019 Honours Award

Bolton golf club member Andrew Dickson has been appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire, the MBE, in the Queens 2019 New Years Honours list. He has been a member of the club for over 15 years and has served on council for 2 years as Chairman of marketing and recently also responsible for membership. The award has been made for his outstanding contribution to business in Bolton and services to the wider Bolton Community and the Quality of Public Life. He was one of the founders of 96.5 Bolton FM the local community radio station and has helped run the station with over 100 volunteers for over 9 years as Chairman. He also founded the travel agents St Andrews Travel in 1983 and ran it for 25 years. At its peak, they employed 75 staff and had a turnover in excess of £25 million and were the largest North West independent travel agent.

In 2018 96.5 Bolton FM was awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service-the MBE for groups, and Andrew and his wife Pat attended Buckingham Palace and had afternoon tea with HRH The Queen.

Andrew was awarded an honorary doctorate from The University of Bolton for his contribution to business in Bolton. He has also been awarded by Bolton Council the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for services to the town.

Andrew said, “I am absolutely thrilled to receive this award and I will never forget, I’ve only achieved what I’ve achieved in life, due to the fantastic team of people around me throughout my working and voluntary career.”

Toby wins again

It was the closing event for the Juniors this last weekend and it was closed in great fashion by Toby Yates shooting a brilliant 40 points off his then 8 handicap. It was a close call though as Roman Brindle and Junior Captain came in under par with 38 points. After the event, the juniors were also presented with the prizes from the Club Championships, Maxwell Trophy, and the Judge Kershaw Knock Out.

Bit of Balsam Bashing!

As we come into the winter period the hard work continues out on the course. The lads are doing a great job and are working flat out to keep the course up to the standards we are accustomed to. The main problem we are faced with this time of year is the leaves that are falling from the trees. You clear them and turn round and they are there again. Whilst the lads are concentrating on the playing surfaces Robin Dawson, the Greens Chairman, has been busy arranging a few work parties to help out. On Monday we have had a second Balsam Bashing party. There are pockets around the course of Himalayan Balsam which is a very invasive plant that sheds 800 seeds a year. Robin and his team are going on a mass cull to try and eradicate as much as possible. If you fancy helping out on the course watch out for the emails from the club about future work parties.

David takes the new Plate Prize

Congratulations go to member David J Hughes on his win in the Presidents Plate final on Sunday. This is a new competition we introduced this year for competitors that entered the first round of the Presidents Prize but were unfortunately knocked out in the opening round. This competition gave them a second chance of glory. David grabbed the opportunity by the scruff of the neck and made his way all the way to the final to take on 18 handicapper Tom Smith. Tom has just become a dad for the first time but he gave it a good shot in difficult conditions and took the match all the way to the 1st extra hole. In the end, David was just too strong and birdied the 19th to take the match and the new title of Presidents Plate winner. Well done David.
